I had these four plaques scattered in various spots around the house–one was in a nightstand drawer, two were in boxes and one was in an office drawer. One day last year, I gathered them all together and hung them above the key holder in my office. The small one on the upper left was a gift from my Mom during my first year of college. It says, “Hang on, Friday’s coming!” My Mom sent it after one particularly hard week when I was really homesick and having a difficult time understanding the teachers in class.
The one on the upper right was given to me by my Aunt Gertie. It says, “Lovely flowers are smiles from God.” Aunt Gertie, my Mom’s sister, was profoundly deaf and she was battling cancer. She didn’t have much time left. I was ten at the time, sitting on the edge of her bed and I remember her smiling. There’s a picture of Aunt Gertie somewhere in one of my Mom’s albums; my sister Jeanie is holding a huge toy comb over her bald head and everyone is laughing. So when I see flowers, I think of Aunt Gertie.
The large one on the lower left was simply one that I found at either a garage sale or a store. It says, “The nicest days are full of love.” I had that one and Aunt Gertie’s plaque hanging on my bedroom wall for many years.
The last one on the lower right was given to me by my first itinerant teacher, Mrs. Rellis. Mrs. Rellis was a special teacher–she was the first teacher to sit me down and challenge me not to let my hearing loss hold me back. It says:
The grand essentials to happiness in this life are
something to do,
something to love, and
something to hope for.
Those four plaques are my source of inspiration every time I hang up a key. Do you have a source of inspiration that is special to you? Tell me about yours in the comments below.
This photo is a part of Wordless Wednesday, even though I used a bunch of words to describe it.

I love this, Karen! I always love having written inspiration around me. An old friend gave me a plaque that said, “Love, Honor, and Negotiate” when I got married. It’s one of my faves.

I love that one! The hubby and I just celebrated 19 years of marriage yesterday. That line is so, so true!
Well that wasn’t exactly wordless LOL but I love precious moments too.

Very nice post…
I am a very visual person and love to have little reminders around me all the time – usually that remind me of my children & family… including my father who passed away a few years ago. Photos everywhere..
One of my fav’s is a pillow, with an old photo on it that was given to me… the photo is of my father and his siblings when they were children. I keep it on the back of a chair in our living room and it’s just always there in a comforting way. I noticed recently when looking at old b-day photos of my kids, etc, that they are often sitting in that chair, with the pillow in the background. I hadn’t planned it out, but it almost looked like my father was there with them.. watching over their shoulder.

I have to say that I get inspiration from my son. He only one and is so enamored with the world and everything in it. I wish I could see things through his innocent eyes but seeing him and his quest for knowledge inspires me. I am visiting you by way of Kim from Accidental Mommies.
I get inspiration from my mom and dad. No matter how difficult life gets they are always there for me. They inspire me by their marriage, as well. They just had their 40th wedding anniversary. In fact, my sisters and I will be having a little celebration for them this Sunday. I also am inspired the sacrifices they made while I was growing up and the sacrifices they continue to make on a daily basis. They truly are inspiring people.
I enjoyed your post. I’m glad that Kim @ What’s That Smell? / Accidental Mommies led me to your blog.
Thanks,

I love the saying on that last one! What a great way to capture some memories and get inspiration at the same time!
I made a poster of the last saying and hung it outside my classroom when I was teaching. Those words still come to me when I focus on what is truly important.

I have a vision board on my wall on which are quotes, pictures, and words that describe what I hope to accomplish in life. I’m constantly adding to it and referring to it – it keeps me on track and reminds me what is important to me. It’s a pretty amazing feeling when I’m able to cross something off the list- and know that I actually made one of my dreams come true.
