Twitter, My Virtual Watercooler

I don’t understand this Twitter thing,” a friend of mine said to me recently.  “I can’t make sense of it all.  What’s the point of all those short sentences?”

My sister-in-law asked me the same thing and so did my neice: I Don’t Get Twitter.

That’s pretty much what I thought too, when Glenda Watson Hyatt introduced me to Twitter over a year ago.  I am so glad that I listened to Glenda, because Twitter has become my virtual watercooler.  In my daily life, I’m often cut off from conversations around me unless I have access to an interpreter, captioning or some super lipreading.  Twitter lets me peek in on conversations (Ah, so that’s what people talk about!) and gives me the opportunity to join in.  I enjoy Twitter so much that I ended up here: Chicago Moms on Twitter.

Liz Strauss is hosting a writing project: 25 Words of Social Media Wisdom.  I’ve decided to join in and share my thoughts on Twitter and what it means to me:

Makes a lot of sense and something hearing people never think about. I “joined” the project and made a blog post about it too – it’s not as profound as Liz’s or yours, but it’s concise!

hmm, I know what you mean, but it is still taking me a while to get used to the whole Twitter thing!! That said, I do feel far more connected to various people up and down the country!

Karen, yes, I view Twitter as my virtual water cooler too. Working from home sometimes feels like I’m in a vacuum. Twitter provides human interaction in almost real-time. And, being only 140 characters, I can keep up with my left thumb.

I love your viewpoint! That’s how I see Twitter as well. I’m not around very many people, so it is great to get to hear all the chatter going on from all corners of the world.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

i agree, THIS is the space for me to connect with like-minded people – and people that teach me new things about the world. working from home, creating your own peer groups is like going to college and CHOOSING your friends for the first time!
