  • 50 States for My 50’s: Missouri

Deep in the middle of The Happiness of Pursuit: Finding the Quest That Will Bring Purpose to Your Life by Chris Guillebeau, I paused to contemplate my own quest.

What did I love to do more than anything in the world?

    Barefoot water skiing.

And just like that, the quest appeared before me:

I will barefoot water ski in all 50 states to celebrate my 50’s–and to encourage, inspire, and prompt others to unwrap their passions at any age.

    States barefooted June 2016

Back in 2010, I rediscovered my passion for barefoot water skiing after seeing a 66-year-old woman, Judy Myers, barefooting on the TODAY Show. At the age of 44, I put my feet back on the water and the passion just keeps multiplying! I now look forward to Growing Bolder instead of older.

At the beginning of this quest, I’ve already barefoot water skied in eight states. In July, I added Missouri to the list while on a trip to visit my brother, Brian. We joined up with Brian Tillema, an attorney from Kansas City and headed out to Lake Lotawana, home of the famed Don Thomson, a true pioneer superstar of barefoot water skiing.

In the same month, I headed down to Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, my family’s hometown. Both of my parents were born there. I never in a million years would have ever thought that I would be able to barefoot water ski in this tiny, rural town. My cousin, Jerry, introduced me to Seth Burgett, an entrepreneur who has patented over 40 items, including YurBuds, semi-customized sports ear buds.

Six-time World Barefoot Champion David Small held a two day ski clinic on a beautiful, private lake. The barefooting conditions were fantastic and everyone in the boat had a blast.

  • What My Daughter Taught Me About Passion

    passion in NY

    “Mom, I’m quitting college.”

Not the words I wanted to hear, but I shouldn’t have been too surprised. My daughter, Ren, had a love/hate relationship with formalized education since she was in elementary school. I can remember some days having to shove her out the car door to make her go to school.

(Yes, I was that kind of parent.)

“Okay, so what’s your plan?” I asked her.

She had her heart set on acting. She was going to come home after the semester ended and figure out a plan. She might move to New York City and live with her cousin. She might try and get a job in Los Angeles and live with a friend. She just knew she wasn’t going to go back to college. Acting school, maybe.

As a parent, I wrestled with a whole range of emotions.

The parent side of me screamed, “oh-my-gosh-she’s-gonna-have-a-tough-life-without-a-degree!”

The Passion Coach side of me calmly whispered, “let her have her journey, she’ll figure it out.”

My conversations with Ren showcased the whole range of those emotions and thoughts. During one conversation, I was calm and rational, even positive. During other conversations, I brought out the “play it safe” cards and the “get your degree first–after that you can do whatever you want” rationality. I think I said some not-so-nice things.

“How can you tell others to follow their passions if you won’t let your own daughter follow her heart?” she asked me.

Yes, she called me on it.

And she was right. I had to let go. This was her journey. Even if I pulled the parenting card and insisted she stay in college, I knew it would create the biggest thorn between us. She had been miserable with school since fourth grade and we had plenty of battles over it.

As the end of summer rolled around, the plan was still unclear. My daughter even had moments of self-doubt, of wondering what direction to go in next.

Then out of the blue, she found an audition for Spring Awakening on Broadway. Without a single bit of hesitation, she booked a flight.

    spring awakening with ren

When she called me on FaceTime to tell me that she acquired a swing role in the play, the joy on her face was crazy radiant. Within a month, she moved to New York City and began studying the lines for four different roles. It wasn’t an easy journey. She slept on a couch until she could find a place of her own. She had to learn the roles without much practice time on the stage.

After many, many weeks of sitting in the audience, the swing room, and backstage, Ren made her debut on stage in the role of Thea. I flew to New York and her older brother joined me. As we sat in the audience waiting for the play to begin, my heart was pounding for her. She was going to step on a Broadway stage for the first time.

    spring awakening debut

I thought back to a lesson that Janet Attwood, author of The Passion Test, taught me. “Whenever you are faced with a decision, a choice, or an opportunity, always choose in favor of your passions.” And Ren had done just that. She chose passion.

I can’t even begin to describe the incredible feeling that bubbled inside of me as I watched Ren perform with Marlee Matlin, Camryn Manheim, Andy Mientus and the Spring Awakening cast. Perform doesn’t even seem to be the right word. She became Thea.

As the cast took their final bow, I thought back to the uncertainty Ren faced when she made the decision to walk away from the “safe” route to pursue something she was immensely passionate about. She didn’t have a plan. She didn’t know the “how.” But she was very, very clear on the what.

And the passion? Well, see for yourself:

  • My Mom’s New Life, How You Can Choose to Live Passionately At Any Age

    photo (6)

“I really like this house. I can see myself living here,” my mom said.

My mom, my sister, my daughter, and my niece were all crammed into a car for a winter-getaway trip to Florida. On the way down, we stopped to tour the model homes for sale at an adult-living community in Nashville. My mom and sister were tired of the long winters in Michigan and looking for a new place to live. The target was Florida and they were planning to rent a house there for three months.

Everything changed the minute we all walked into the house in Nashville. A few hours later, my mom and my sister made the decision to sell the lake house we’ve had since 1977 and move to a place where they knew no one.

    Just like that.

The move turned out to be a rough one, with one challenge after another presenting itself. But at 87 years of age, after dealing with a lifetime of challenges, my mom simply buckled down and tackled them as they happened.

There were times my mom and sister questioned their decision, but overall, the move was the best thing for them both. Despite health challenges, my mom has been trying new things–such as learning yoga and zipping around the track with her walker.

When it comes to creating a passionate life, one of the most common complaints I come across is: “I’m too old.”

    Are you really?

Check your pulse. If you still have a pulse, you still have a life. At any given time, you can change your thoughts, your attitude, your outlook, and your actions.

  • Unwrapping Your Passion: Interview with Carole Cannon

    carole cannon

When I met Carole Cannon at a Passion Test workshop, we connected immediately. Every bit of Carole screams PASSION! Carole’s journey hasn’t been an easy one. Carole lost her last child from a placenta abruption during childbirth and almost lost her own life as well. Her husband died of a heart attack at the age of 42, leaving Carole to raise their five children alone.

Carole found her passion at a rummage sale. Someone dropped off a massage table. The table triggered an “Ah ha” moment as Carole realized she could become a massage therapist. The clues were present all along: in high school, Carole used to give massages to friends.

In this interview, Carole talks about discovering her passion and what it means to wake up and love your life:

  • Reinventing Yourself at Any Age

    boomers reinvented

“All our life experiences are building blocks to the next opportunity, to the next path, to the next journey, and it’s up to us to take that and go in that direction.”

     ~Karen Putz

I’m turning 50 this year and I am so looking forward to celebrating that milestone.

But at the age of 44, I felt quite the opposite about life. I was NOT looking forward to the years ahead. Life had become ho-hum and I wasn’t thrilled with approaching mid-life. Instead, I was looking back with regret, wishing I had done this or that. I had the feeling that the best years of my life were over and done with–and that aging was a downhill process.

karen and judyMeeting 66-year old Judy Myers turned all of that around for me. I first saw her on the TODAY show which featured her story of taking up an extreme sport at the age of 53. Judy was older than me and truly living life to the fullest. We both shared a love for barefoot water skiing, and she brought me back to the sport I loved as a teen. Our story has been shown on PBS and CNN:

A Mom Who Walks on Water

    Making a Splash on Water

In the last five years, I’ve reinvented myself over and over by trying new things and experiencing new paths. In fact, I love helping others to the same–to unwrap their passions and start living life wide open.

    karen love

Over at Boomers ReinventedLeAura Anderson is on a mission to encourage the Boomer generation and beyond to reinvent themselves and live their best life.  I shared my own reinvention in an interview with LeAura in which we talk about passion:

    Life Wide Open (Captioned)

If the first half of your life journey hasn’t quite been the life you wanted, you can simply start reinventing yourself right now and pivot in a new direction. Learn new skills or try something you’ve always wanted to do. Connect with a mentor and receive guidance. Experience something you’ve been putting off for “Someday.”

Life begins now. Don’t put it off. Reinvent yourself.

  • The Three Places You Can Discover Clues to Your Passions

    answers you seek quote

    “I don’t have a passion.”

“I don’t know what my passions are.”

“I haven’t found that ONE passion.”

Is this you? Are you searching for something “more” in your life?

I used to be so envious of people who found their passions early in life and went on to have stellar careers in that direction.  For many years, I was drifting through life with a couple of minor dreams, waiting for that magical “Someday” to appear so that I could start living them.

Someday I was going to write a book.

Someday I was going to travel.

Someday I was going to get up on stage and speak.

Someday I was going to live my passions–if I just knew what they were…

It wasn’t until my 44th birthday that I started looking for some clues to my passions. I explored this topic in great detail.  I loved to write. I loved to talk to people. The more I thought about it, the more I began to realize the inklings of passion were indeed there. I just had ignored them for so long.

I was fortunate. I took those clues and created a life centered around passion and joy. I ended up writing several books. I unwrapped a long-buried passion for barefoot water skiing. I travel and speak on various topics–especially PASSION!

There’s a richness in the journey when you center it around what you’re passionate about. Passion fuels you.

    So where can you start?

You can start with this simple activity that will begin to bring focus on your passions. Carve out some time in your day–you’ll need at least 30 minutes. An hour is even better. No distractions. Turn off the phone. Shut the door.

Or even better, go someplace where technology isn’t a factor. I did this on a picnic table in a forest preserve near my home.

Here are three places you can discover clues to your passions:

    The Past:

Reflect back on your childhood thoughts. What did you long for as a child? What did you grow up dreaming about? What were your moments of joy? What have you abandoned doing but wish you could do again?

    The Future:

What are you putting off for “Someday?” When you envision the future–who are you with? What are you doing? What do you have? How do others see you?

    Right Now:

Where do you often go in your mind with your thoughts? What do you daydream about? When you are doing something that is of no interest to you, where do your thoughts drift off to?

Your past, present, and future thoughts are rich with clues. Being aware and writing them down is a powerful way to gain clarity.

  • The Speaker Journey

    karen putz speaking rotary 2

A year ago, I embarked on a journey of becoming a speaker. In reality, I had been speaking for years and years, but I shifted my focus to specific topics and audiences. I especially wanted to target the areas of parenting, overcoming adversity, and passion.  It’s been a year of travel, learning, and lots of fun in the process. The best reward of all always comes in the form of feedback– smiles, laughter, or tears.  I especially love it when teachers share their amazement at having their students captivated and engaged, because that’s a tough audience to entertain!

I’ve been doing a lot of speaking at schools with deaf and hard of hearing students as well as parents, due to two books geared to those audiences, The Parenting Journey, Raising Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and The Passionate Lives of Deaf and Hard of Hearing People.   I also have a presentation designed for all students called “The Gift of a Different Ability.”

More and more, I’m getting requests to do a two-hour “Unwrapping Your Passion” workshop. This is a fun, interactive session geared toward discovering your top five passions and creating a life around what you really want most. As a certified Passion Test Facilitator and Passion Coach, I especially enjoy this topic!

If your school, organization, or business would like a speaker who walks on water (yeah, my other passion is barefoot water skiing!), contact me at karen@karenputz.com or 630-405-6262.

  • The Growing Bolder Lifestyle

    885396_10151910336238581_656007663_o

Back in 2011, I discovered an awesome website called Growing Bolder.  I stumbled upon the Growing Bolder segment on Banana George while doing some research for the Gliding Soles, Lessons from a Life on Water book I was writing at the time. “It’s not about age, it’s about attitude,” was the Growing Bolder tagline.  “It’s an attitude. A mission. A passion. A team of people who believe in the power of hope, inspiration and possibility.”  The site was filled with one inspiring story after another featuring people living passionate lives.  Marc Middleton, the founder and CEO, left his job as a reporter in 2006 to form Bolder Media Group.  He was tired of constantly reporting news that was physically, emotionally, and mentally draining day after day.

Intrigued, energized, and inspired by all the stories, I connected with Bill Shafer, the Executive Vice President and introduced myself.  Like Marc, Bill also left his job as a reporter and shared the same mission and vision of creating positive, uplifting content.  I boldly invited Bill and his crew to come to the World Barefoot Center. We ended up having a great time together and Growing Bolder produced two segments which were shown on PBS stations:

A Mom Who Walks on Water

    The Barefoot Competitor

I loved the mission and vision of Growing Bolder so much that I told Bill, “I want to come and work for Growing Bolder.”

    1522977_10151961560053581_540492646_o

And now I’m the lucky one. I recently joined the Growing Bolder Blogging team. I get to share inspirational stories, thoughts, and ramblings with a passionate group of Growing Bolder Elite Bloggers.  Of course, it was only fitting that I introduced Judy Myers, The Barefoot Competitor, in my first blog post.  Four years ago, Judy was pivotal in helping me to unwrap my passion for barefoot water skiing again. I want to pay it forward in encouraging others to pursue their passions, no matter the age.

If you’re at a point in your life where you’ve become stuck in the “same old, same old” routine, I invite you to come over to Growing Bolder and hang out with some truly amazing people, because as Jim Rohn says, “You’re the average of the five people you hang out with.”   Get a daily dose of passion on the Growing Bolder Facebook page.  Adopt the Growing Bolder lifestyle.  You don’t have to settle for growing older. Grow bolder instead.

  • How Do You Do All That You Do?

Lately, my bio reads like a gal off in too many directions. One week, I’m in Vancouver doing a presentation for Hands & Voices. Then I’m off in another direction doing a workshop for parents of deaf and hard of hearing kids or “Beyond the Limits” for deaf and hard of hearing students.  Yet another week, I’ll be at the World Barefoot Center (Thanks to my sponsors, ZVRS, Phonak and Tommie Copper) learning how to get up backwards behind the boat or working as a Blog Manager for the site.

Then there’s BookHands discussions every six weeks, Mentoring with families. I’m a Manager with SendOutCards so I share that resource everywhere I go. I’m a Passion Coach and a Certified Passion Test Facilitator–I help people unwrap their top five passions. I’m an author of three books with several more on the way. When I have a free day, I substitute teach.  I’m also a mom of three teens and a wife.

Someone recently asked me, “How the heck do you do all that?”

The answer is pretty simple: when you do what you love to do, you can do so much more in a day. You let the insignificant stuff fall to the wayside because you’re deeply immersed in your passion.

My friend, Sutton Parks, whom I met at Dan Miller’s Coaching with Excellence (affiliate link to some great stuff!) workshop recently posted a great quote by Kix Brooks on Facebook which pretty much sums it up perfectly:

“I am definitely working more now,” he says, “but the word ‘work’ is the confusing part of that. People ask me all the time how do you fit all this stuff in, how do you schedule it? The secret is everything I’m doing is something that I really want to do. It’s just like if you go to the beach for the weekend, you’re gonna fit it all in. I want to go here, I want to go to my favorite place to eat, I want to ride go-karts, I want to rent wave runners, and I’m gonna sit here and put my legs up and read a book. You get all that stuff in because you want to. That’s how my life is. It’s like I’m running from place to place and I can’t wait to get to the next one because when I show up, I — for the most part — kind of know what I’m doing. [laughs] It’s all interesting and fun to me, and I just can’t wait to do it all.”

I probably will narrow all of this down at some point, but right now, I have a lot of overlap. For example, I write when I’m on the plane, I network for SendOutCards/my books/future gigs when I travel, and I’m home the rest of the time hanging with the family.

How can you do more of what you love in your life? First and foremost, you have to identify what it is you enjoy doing most. What brings you joy? Set your intention–what do you want to intend in your life today/tomorrow/this year? With every action, you are either moving closer to your passion or further away. Choose wisely.
